A superbly-bred stakes winner, Stephanoatsee is by sire of sires, A.P. Indy, out of Broodmare of the Year Oatsee, dam of four other stakes winners, including classic winner Shackleford. Stephanoatsee is a product of the A.P. Indy/Fappiano cross which has also produced outstanding sires Tapit – like Stephanoatsee out of an Unbridled mare – and Bernardini.
Tapit and Bernardini have both enjoyed considerable success with mares from the Storm Cat line with a Champion out of a mare by Sir Cat; grade one winners out of mares by Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg and Henny Hughes; grandsire of Scat Daddy); a grade one winner out of a mare by Tabasco Cat; graded winners out of mares by Menifee and Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief); Tale of Cat (sire of Lion Heart); Catienus; Forestry (sire of Stephanoatsee’s classic winning half-brother Shackleford, and also of Discreet Cat); Giant’s Causeway (a brother to Freud, and sire of First Samurai); and Exploit. Other Storm Cat sources include Bernstein, Cat Thief, Forest Wildcat, Stormy Atlantic and Stormin Fever (who both give inbreeding to Stephanoatsee’s male line ancestor Seattle Slew), Bluegrass Cat (who gives linebreeding to A.P. Indy), Mountain Cat, Storm Boot and Yankee Gentleman. Bernardini has a grade one winner out of a mare by Nijinsky II, and there is a Tapit grade one winner out of a mare by Marlin, a son of the Nijinsky II horse, Sword Dance, and a graded winner out of a mare by Shadeed, the sire of Alydeed. It would also be possible to introduce Nijinsky II through Royal Academy (sire of a graded stakes winner out of the dam of Stephanoatsee), Seattle Dancer, Sky Classic and Strawberry Road.
Both Tapit and Bernardini have grade one winners out of mares by Deputy Minister, and from Deputy Minister line mares, there are also graded winners out of mares by Graeme Hall (by Dehere, broodmare sire of a Bernardini stakes winner) and Touch Gold. This also suggests trying mares by Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper, Awesome of Course and Toccet), Deputy Commander, French Deputy, Salt Lake and Silver Deputy (sire of Posse, Badge of Silver and Spring At Last). Tapit has also sired a graded stakes out of a mare by Regal Classic, by Vice Regent, the sire of Deputy Minister.
Bernardini has a grade one winner out of a mare by Medaglia d’Oro, and Tapit has a grade one winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire El Prado (also sire of Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller). El Prado is by Northern Dancer son, Sadler’s Wells, and there is a Bernardini stakes winner out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells son, Galileo, and A.P. Indy has also enjoyed success with Sadler’s Wells through Horse Chestnut. Out of mares from the Danzig line, Tapit and Bernardini have stakes winners from daughters of Boundary, Danzig Connection, Belong to Me, Chief’s Crown (sire of Concerto, grandsire of Bellamy Road), Honor Grades (giving inbreed to A.P. Indy’s dam, Weekend Surprise), Langfuhr, Lost Soldier, Pine Bluff and Polish Numbers. Other sources would include War Front, Dayjur, Exchange Rate, Hard Spun and Honor Grades (giving inbreed to Weekend Surprise, which is already found in the three Bernardini graded stakes winners).
Out of mares descending from Icecapade – a three-quarters relative to Northern Dancer – through Wild Again, Tapit has a grade one winner out of a mare by Wild Again, who is also broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Bernardini, and there is also a Tapit. stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Wild Rush. Wild Again could also be brought in through Offlee Wild, Milwaukee Brew and Whiskey Wisdom. There is also a graded stakes winner by Bernardni out of mare by Caller I.D. (by Phone Trick, from the Clever Trick branch of Icecadape), and Phone Trick is also sire of Intidab, Mazel Trick and Favorite Trick.
With regard to mares from the Mr. Prospector line, Bernardini has been exceptional with daughters of Carson City, getting five stakes winners, including the grade one winners Cavorting and A.Z. Warrior, and this is a strain that can be introduced through Good and Tough, City Zip, Flying Chevron, Lord Carson, Five Star Day, Cuvee and Pollard's Vision. Bernardini also has a grade one winner Dame Dorothy out of a mare by Woodman (sire of Hansel), and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Kingmambo (whose son, Lemon Drop Kid, is out of a three-quarters sister to A.P. Indy), as well as stakes winners out of mares by Smart Strike (sire of Curlin and Lookin At Lucky) and Seeking the Gold (sire of Petionville, and of Mutakddim and Cape Town, who both give well-placed inbreeding to Seattle Slew). Tapit has a grade one winner out of a mare by Mr. Greeley (sire of El Corredor), a son of Gone West (who is interesting here as he is from the immediate family of Stephanoatsee); and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Gone West son Grand Slam. This would encourage trying daughters of Speightstown, Elusive Quality and Proud Citizen. There also seems to be a Tapit affinity for the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector, with a grade one winner out of a daughter of Distorted Humor (also broodmare sire of a Bernardini stakes winner); a grade one winner out of a mare by Editor’s Note; as well as two stakes winners out of mares by Coronado’s Quest, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Bankers Gold. Other potential Forty Niner line broodmare sires include Trippi, End Sweep, Jules, Luhuk and Twining. It could also be interesting to bring in Mr. Prospector through Afleet Alex (sire of a graded stakes winning half-sister to Stephanoatsee) and his sire Northern Afleet.
Like Stephanoatsee, Tapit is out of a mare by Unbridled, a son of Fappiano, but Tapit is sire of grade one winner Ring Weekend out of a mare by Fappiano line stallion, Cryptoclearance, and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Crypto Star, inviting daughters of Cryptoclearance line stallions Candy Ride and Victory Gallop. Tapit also has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, giving inbreeding to Unbridled. Sons of Unbridled’s Song include Rockport Harbor, First Defence (a reverse Seattle Slew/Unbridled cross to Stephanoatsee), Old Fashioned, Half Ours, Dunkirk (a reverse A.P. Indy/Fappiano cross to Stephanoatsee), Even The Score, Eurosilver and Songandaprayer. From other branches of the Unbridled line come Broken Vow, Grindstone, Birdstone and Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile). It could also pay to consider introducing Fappiano through Rubiano (sire of Burning Roma and Too Much Bling) and Quiet American (sire of Real Quiet; grandsire of Midnight Lute).
Stephanoatsee is half-brother to grade one winner, Lady Joanne, a daughter of Orientate, from the Blushing Groom line. Orientate is a son of Mt. Livermore (also sire of Housebuster and Peaks and Valleys). In addition, both Bernardini and Tapit have stakes winners out of mares by Cherokee Run (sire of Yonaguska and Kafwain).
It could also be worth trying Stephanoatsee with mares by More Than Ready (broodmare sire of Bernardini grade one performer, and with In Reality through Valid Appeal (sire of Successful Appeal, Valid Wager and Valid Expectations).
Bernardini also has graded stakes winner Romansh out of a mare by Go For Gin, a son of Cormorant.
