Mission Impazible Led NY’s 2017 2YO Sires & 2nd-Crop Sires – 1st Time in 6 Years Same Sire Tops Both

By Rab Hagin

With 2017 progeny earnings of $1,787,446, MISSION IMPAZIBLE led New York-based 2017 second-crop sires by a figure that was more than three and quarter times the progeny earnings of the runner-up on that list – while also leading New York-based juvenile sires for 2017 with $1,058,063 in 2-year-old earnings. It was the first time in six years that the same stallion topped both lists among New York sires, and the stallion that did so in 2011 subsequently set an annual progeny earnings record for a New York sire (broken in 2017 by Freud) prior going to California. Mission Impazible also was the leading New York first-crop sire of 2016. His runners have earned a total of more than $2,440,000 through 2017.

It is rather unique for a leading first-crop sire’s second crop to be even more accomplished than his first, but that is what happened with Mission Impazible’s 2015 crop, consisting of newly-minted 3-year-olds of 2018, even though his first crop (2014) also continued winning in 2017. Over 86 percent of Mission Impazible’s lifetime winners through 2017 also won in 2017, when almost half were 2-year-olds. Highlighted by Twin Creek Racing Stables’ homebred Grade 2 winner, PURE SILVER ($286,367), Mission Impazible’s juveniles in 2017 scored in 17 races (ten on fast dirt, six on wet dirt, once on turf) and won or placed in ten black type stakes. Mission Impazible led all New York-based juvenile sires for 2017 in number of winners (12), races won, and number of stakes horses (stakes winners or stakes-placed).

Mission Impazible has sired open-company NYRA juvenile stakes winners – by big margins – in both of his first two crops. Four of his winners in his first crop to date are six-figure-earners. Seven of his second-crop juvenile winners of 2017 won their debuts (by margins totaling 19½ lengths), and three of those winners are still undefeated.
