New York’s Leading First and Second Season Sire, and current Leading Third Season Sire in 2018, Mission Impazible, has an open company juvenile stakes winner in each of his first two crops. He is a multiple graded stakes winning millionaire, and Unbridled’s Song out of a multiple stakes winner who is dam of three graded scorers.
Mission Impazible is sire of the Adirondack Stakes (G2) winner, Pure Silver, out a mare by Forest Wildcat (sire of D’Wildcat and Wildcat Heir). The Storm Cat branch of Northern Dancer appears in the broodmare sire line of nearly 40 Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners. This includes grade one winners out of mares by Storm Cat himself and Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg – himself broodmare sire of two Unbridled’s Song line graded stakes winners – Henny Hughes and Cactus Ridge – broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line graded stakes winner – and grandsire of Scat Daddy); graded stakes winners out of mares by Lion Heart (by Tale of the Cat, himself broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line stakes winner), Storm Creek and Vision and Verse; and stakes winners out of mares by Giant’s Causeway (a brother to Freud, and sire of First Samurai), Stormy Atlantic, Forestry, Forest Wildcat, Tabasco Cat, Storm Boot, Bernstein, Pure Prize, Menifee (by Harlan, also sire of Harlan’s Holiday) and Catienus. Unbridled’s Song also has a grade one winner out of a mare by Summer Squall (a Storm Bird son bred on the same cross as Storm Cat).
Mission Impazible is half-brother to grade one winner and graded stakes sire Forest Camp. That horse is a son of Deputy Minister, and Mission Impazible has already sired Tremont Stakes winner, Silver Mission, out of a mare by Deputy Minister son, Silver Deputy (sire of Posse) and multiple stakes placed Ethan Hunt out of a mare by Deputy Minister himself. Overall, the cross of Unbridled’s Song and sons with Deputy Minister line mares has produced 25 stakes winners, including grade one winners from daughters of Dehere (sire of Graeme Hall) and French Deputy, graded winners out of a mares by Deputy Minister himself, as well as Touch Gold and Service Stripe, and stakes winners out of mares by Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper and Awesome of Course), Salt Lake, Deputy Commander and Defrere.
Storm Cat and Deputy Minister are both from the Northern Dancer line, and the cross of Unbridled's Song and his sons over mares descending from Northern Dancer through Danzig has produced 20 stakes winners, including from daughters of Chief's Crown (sire of Concerto; grandsire of Bellamy Road), Langfuhr, Polish Numbers, Belong to Me, Pine Bluff, Boundary (sire of Big Brown) and Corridor Key, with other options including Hard Spun, Exchange Rate, War Chant and War Front (who might be particularly interesting). From the Dixieland Band branch of Northern Dancer, there are graded winners out of mares by Dixieland Band and Disco Rico, and stakes winners out of mares by Dixie Union and Citidancer, which would encourage considering mares by Dixie Brass and Hook and Ladder. Other branches of Northern Dancer to provide the dams of Unbridled’s Song stakes winners include Sadler's Wells (sire of El Prado – himself broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line stakes winner – and grandsire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller) and Nijinsky II (who can be brought in through Royal Academy, Shadeed, Alydeed, Seattle Dancer, Sky Classic and Strawberry Road). From the Icecapade branch of the Nearctic (sire of Northern Dancer) line, Unbridled's Song is sire of the brilliant Zensational out of a mare by Phone Trick (by Clever Trick), a horse who is also broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Unbridled’s Song’s sire, Unbridled.
Unbridled enjoyed a strong affinity with mares by Caro, Unbridled's Song being an example. In turn, Unbridled's Song has a grade one winner out of a mare by Dr. Carter (a son of Caro), and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Siberian Express (by a son of Caro), and his son, Songandaprayer, sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Caro son With Approval. Other good sources of Caro would be Cozzene and his son Alphabet Soup (broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song stakes winner); In Excess, his son Indian Charlie (broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line stakes winner) and grandson Uncle Mo; and Tejano (broodmare sire of a stakes winner by a son of Unbridled's Song). Caro is a Nasrullah line stallion, and from the Naskra branch of that line, Unbridled's Song has an excellent strike rate with mares by Olympio.
The cross of Unbridled's Song with mares descending from Blushing Groom, has produced stakes winners out of mares by Mt. Livermore and his sons, Housebuster, Orientate and Peaks and Valleys, Rahy (broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by Unbridled) and Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run; grandsire of Yonaguska and Kafwain).
Unbridled's Song and his sons have also begun to find success when bred back over mares from certain branches own Mr. Prospector sire line. The Gone West branch has done particularly well with a grade one winner out of a mare by Mr. Greeley, and a graded winner out of a mare by his son, El Corredor, as well as graded winners out of mares Gone West himself and West By West, and stakes winners out of mares by Smarty Jones (by Elusive Quality), Came Home and Proud Citizen, with other options including Speightstown and Grand Slam. The cross with mares from the Forty Niner branch has found success through Distorted Humor – the broodmare sire of Unbridled’s Song’s brilliant son, Arrogate, and sire of Flower Alley and Sharp Humor – as well as Tactical Advantage, Trippi (by End Sweep) – the broodmare sire of Liam’s Map – Gold Case and Luhuk, with this strain also available through Coronado’s Quest, Roar, Gold Fever and Editor’s Note. There is a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Seeking the Gold, two stakes winners, one graded out of mares by that horses’s son, Mutakddim, and a graded winner out of a mare by another son, Cape Town, and Seeking the Gold is also sire of Petionville. Champion Forever Unbridled is by Unbridled’s Song out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid (by Kingmambo), and a grade one winner out of a mare by Smart Strike (sire of Curlin, Lookin At Lucky and English Channel). There appears to be an emerging cross with mares by Thunder Gulch (by Gulch), and his son, Point Given, and there is a also a stakes winner out of a mare by Fusaichi Pegasus.
The cross of Unbridled’s Song and his sons over Roberto through Dynaformer is showing promise, and there are also Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners out mares descending from Roberto through You and I and his sire Kris S. (also sire of Arch, Rock Hard Ten, Prized and Kissin Kris), a grade one winner out of a mare by Lear Fan, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Repriced. Roberto is a son of Hail to Reason, and from the Stop the Music branch, Unbridled’s Song is sire of grade one winner Stop Traffic out of a mare by Cure the Blues (sire of American Chance). From the Halo branch of Hail to Reason, Mission Impazible is sire of stakes placed first crop two-year-old Paz the Bourbon out of a mare by More Than Ready.
Overall, the Unbridled’s Song cross with A.P. Indy has not been outstanding, but Pulpit has been an exception, which suggests daughters of Sky Mesa (a reverse cross to the broodmare sire of Emcee) and Tapit (who is particularly interesting on pedigree) could also be considered. Mares by Jump Start, another reverse cross to the broodmare sire of Emcee, may also be interesting. We’ll also note that the cross with mares by Tiznow (sire of Tiz Wonderful) is showing promise, and that there are two stakes winners, one graded out of mares by Macho Uno, and another out of a mare by his sire, Holy Bull.
