Undefeated at two and winner of three consecutive graded stakes at three, Forty Tales was one of the most impressive sprinter/milers of his crop. By Storm Cat’s brilliant son, Tale of the Cat – a Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds – Forty Tales is from an outstanding Claiborne Farm family.
Although Tale of the Cat is a Northern Dancer line horse, he has done well when crossed back over other branches of Northern Dancer. Tale of the Cat line stallions have sired at more than 20 stakes winners out of mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer, including a grade one winner and a grade two winner out of mares from the Danehill branch, which suggests that horse’s brother, Eagle Eyed (also the broodmare sire of a Tale of the Cat stakes winner), as well as graded stakes winners out of mares by Sea Hero (who is broodmare sire of a Tale of the Cat line stakes winners, and whose sire, Polish Navy, is broodmare sire of a Tale of the Cat line stakes winner) and Lost Soldier (bred on the same cross as Tale of the Cat’s sire, Storm Cat), and stakes winners out of mares by Anabaa, Honor Grades, Boundary and Pine Bluff. It might also be worth introducing Danzig through Chief’s Crown (bred on a similar cross to Storm Cat, and sire of Concerto and grandsire of Bellamy Road), Belong to Me, Polish Numbers, Dayjur, Exchange Rate, Langfuhr, Hard Spun, War Chant and War Front.
The Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer has also worked well under Tale of the Cat and sons. This includes the brilliant Drefong out of a mare by Ghostzapper (by Awesome Again, also sire of Awesome of Course and Toccet), graded stakes winners out of mares by French Deputy and Salt Lake, and stakes winners out of mares by Deputy Minister himself, and Touch Gold. Dehere (bred on the same cross as Tale of the Cat’s sire, Storm Cat, and sire of Graeme Hall) and his brother Defrere, Silver Deputy (sire of Posse) and Deputy Commander offer other opportunities. There are three Tale of the Cat line stakes winners out of mares from the Nureyev branch of Northern Dancer – which should be particularly good here, as Forty Tales carries Nureyev’s relative Topsider. Tale of the Cat and his sons are responsible for a grade one winner out of a mare by Nureyev son Peintre Celebre, and stakes winners from mares by Zilzal and Fasliyev, and this strain could also be introduced through Theatrical and Atticus. Tale of the Cat line stallions have also worked over Nureyev’s three-quarters brother Sadler’s Wells (another relative to Topsider) and sons, including a grade one winner out of a mare El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro – also already broodmare sire of a Tale of the Cat stakes winner – Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller), There are also Tale of the Cat line stakes winners descending from Northern Dancer out of mares by Dixieland Band (sire of Dixie Union, Dixie Brass and Hook and Ladder), Sword Dance, Shadeed and Royal Academy (all from the Nijinsky II line) and Gate Dancer (by Sovereign Dancer).
Tale of the Cat and his sons have enjoyed considerable success when crossed over mares from the Roberto line. This includes four stakes winners, three graded, out of daughters of Red Ransom, and as well as Kentucky Derby placed stakes winner Firing Line out of a mare by Red Ransom son, Hold For Gold; a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Arch, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Prized (both by Kris S., himself broodmare sire of a Tale of the Cat line classic winner, and also sire of Kissin Kris, Rock Hard Ten and You and I); a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Silver Hawk; and a stakes winner out of a mare by Dynaformer (sire of Temple City). Roberto is from the Hail to Reason line, and from the Halo branch of that line, Tale of the Cat has grade one winner Tale of Ekati out of a mare by Sunday Silence, and a Tale of the Cat son sired the brilliant two-year-old and successful sire, Kantharos, out of a mare by Southern Halo (sire of More Than Ready). There are also stakes winners on this cross out of mares by Sunny’s Halo (sire of Dispersal) and Saint Ballado (sire of Captain Bodgit, Sweetsouthernsaint, Yankee Victor, Straight Man and Flame Thrower, and a brother to Devil’s Bag, sire of Twilight Agenda, Devil His Due, Abaginone and Diablo). Halo might also be tried through Jolie's Halo and Halo's Image. Storm Cat line stallions have also crossed well with Hail to Reason via Stop the Music, and Tale of the Cat and his sons have sired two stakes winners, one graded, out of mares by Stop the Music’s son Cure the Blues (sire of American Chance).
Forty Tales is bred on the cross of Tale of the Cat over a mare by a son of Mr. Prospector, and is inbred 3 x 3 to that horse. It could, however, be worth reintroducing Mr. Prospector via Fappiano, a strain that is in the broodmare sire line of 12 Tale of the Cat line stakes winners. Among those bred on this cross are grade one winner She’s A Tiger out of a mare by Cahill Road; six stakes winners, four graded, out of mares by Unbridled’s Song (whose sire, Unbridled – also broodmare sire of a Tale of the Cat line graded stakes winner – is a brother to Cahill Road), and graded winners out of mares by Grindstone (sire of Birdstone, who would give a double of Storm Bird) and Quiet American (sire of Real Quiet; grandsire of Midnight Lute). Unbridled and Unbridled’s Song can be also introduced via Rockport Harbor and Werblin (both broodmare sires of Tale of the Cat line stakes winner), Broken Vow, Empire Maker, Eurosilver, Even the Score, Red Bullet, and Songandaprayer. Fappiano might also be profitably introduced through Pentelicus (three-quarters brother to Unbridled and Cahill Road), Rubiano (sire of Burning Roma and Too Much Bling), and Cryptoclearance, his son Victory Gallop and his grandson, Candy Ride. Other branches of Mr. Prospector that might be tried here would be Carson City (sire of Good and Tough, City Zip, Flying Chevron, Lord Carson, Five Star Day, Cuvee and Pollard's Vision), Forty Niner (including through Coronado’s Quest and Tactical Advantage – both broodmare sires of Tale of the Cat line stakes winners – as well as Distorted Humor, Roar, Gold Fever, Gold Case, Banker’s Gold, Editor’s Note, End Sweep, Twining, Trippi, Precise End, Jules and Luhuk) and Thunder Gulch (who gives a double of Storm Bird, and is sire of Point Given).
From Damascus line mares, Tale of the Cat has a grade one winner out of a mare by Private Account (who might be introduced through Private Terms and his son, Afternoon Deelites, as well as Personal Flag, Corporate Report, Secret Hello, Unaccounted For and Valley Crossing), and there are two Tale of the Cat line stakes winners out of mares by Time For A Change (sire of Fly So Free), which also suggests trying daughters of Gilded Time.
Tale of the Cat and sons crossed very well with mares by Seattle Slew. The Capote branch of that line has also responded well with three stakes winners, two grade one, out of mares by Capote himself, and two stakes winners out of mares by his son Boston Harbor, also suggesting Matty G and his son, Mayakovsky. The cross with mares by Beau Genius has yielded graded stakes winners for Tale of the Cat and a son, suggesting other sources of that horse’s sire, Bold Ruckus, among them Bold Executive, Demaloot Demashoot, Highland Ruckus, Katahaula County and Kiridashi.
From the In Reality line, there is a Tale of the Cat graded stakes winner out of a mare by Honour and Glory and a stakes winner out of a mare by Waquoit, both sons of Relaunch (who is also available through Skywalker, Bertando, Cee’s Tizzy, Tiznow and Officer), and also graded stakes winners out of mares by Valid Appeal (sire of Successful Appeal, Valid Wager and Valid Expectations) and Really Secret. Tale of the Cat already has a duo of stakes winners out of mares by Indian Charlie, and another from a mare by his sire, In Excess. Forty Tales may be particularly well-suited by mares carrying Pleasant Colony, a cross that has already produced two stakes winners and a grade one placed performer for Tale of the Cat. Tale of the Cat also has a stakes winner from a mare by Pleasant Colony son, Pleasant Tap, and it could also be worth trying mares by such as Pleasantly Perfect, St. Jovite, Colonial Affair and Roanoke. There are also stakes winners by Tale of the Cat line stallions out of mares by Great Above and his son, Holy Bull, Purge and Sky Mesa (both by Pulpit, also sire of Tapit and Corinthian), Montbrook and Lord at War.
